Tabletop Table

A Kickstarter store, rebuilt to sell the table, the kit and the setup.

Tabletop Table makes portable gaming tables — the solid-walnut Relic and the lighter Hexlite — that sit on the table you already own, fold away with their accessories inside, and join along a magnetic rail into bigger setups. 365 backers funded it at over 900% on Kickstarter. It sold from a stock Dawn theme still set up for the campaign: a pop-up asking visitors to reserve a table, product titles ending in “- Pre-order” above an “Available now!” badge, the description and specifications closed in accordions, and a configurator that named a setup for your game but never said what it cost or let you buy it. We kept the photography and the type — PP Pangaia, Orleans and Yport — applied the merchant's new Identity Package in place of the campaign purple, and rebuilt the store on a custom Shopline theme around how people buy a table: a kit builder, a configurator that prices each setup and adds it to the cart, and accessories labelled by the table they fit.

Where this project stands today. The custom theme, built on 7 October, is the published theme on the Shopline store, behind the storefront password; tabletoptable.com still serves the Shopify site. Before the build, the design went through four rounds of merchant review as a clickable prototype, against the merchant's own ten-point checklist. Built and live on the theme: homepage, both collections, two product pages with kit builders, the game configurator with all 5,430 game records, About, FAQ, Contact, Assembly & Care, Accessibility, GPSR and the four policies. Before launch: kit pricing carried into the cart, the cart's setup recommendations and accessory-credit bar, checkout, payments, shipping, tax, preorder handling and email set up with the Shopline team, and an end-to-end test order. Every screenshot below is labelled with its source.

The Numbers That Moved

42→91

Lighthouse Performance, mobile product page (two runs: 42–44 → 80–91). Largest Contentful Paint fell from 27–28 s to 3.0–4.5 s.

48 MB→5.7 MB

Homepage weight on mobile (Lighthouse). The old homepage autoplays three videos of 30.2, 12.0 and 3.7 MB; the new hero film is two clips of about 2 MB each.

24→3

Third-party hosts on the homepage. Klaviyo, Gorgias, Google, accessiBe, Facebook and Shopify's own services down to Stripe, Cloudflare Insights and our build-review widget — before the reviews and email apps are chosen.

0→4

Configurator setups with a price and an Add Setup to Cart button. The old configurator listed quantities only; the new one prices CORE, COREX, DICOREX and TRICOREX and adds the whole setup to the cart.

The Audit at a Glance

Nine dimensions, scored 0–10 from what we measured and clicked through. “After” is the Shopline storefront as it stands today behind the storefront password — including the items still on the punch list, so the product page is marked down for the kit price that doesn't reach the cart yet. Desktop speed was already good on the old store; the gains are on phones.

The Same Table, Without the Campaign in the Way

The hero film and the photography were already the strongest things on the site, and we kept them, along with the homepage's own sections. What changed is everything layered over them: the campaign pop-up, the late-pledges bar, the floating chat bubble and the accessibility overlay are gone, and the first screen now says what the table does and why to trust it.

Before

  • A Klaviyo pop-up — “Funded by 365 Backers · Late Pledges Are Still Open · Reserve Your Table” — opens over the hero a few seconds after load, on desktop and on phones.
  • The bar reads “365 Backers · 900%+ Funded · Late Pledges Now Open”; the page's H1 element is empty, and the one button is “Order Now”.
  • No free-shipping threshold anywhere on the site — not in the bar, the product page, the cart, the FAQ or the shipping policy.
  • 373 requests to 24 third-party hosts — Klaviyo ×5, Gorgias ×5, Google ×5, Shopify's own ×4, accessiBe ×2, Facebook ×2 and one more — including a chat bubble fixed over the page and an accessibility overlay.

After

  • One H1, “Elevate your play”, then the promise: it sits on the surface you already own, turns it into an organised game space, and folds away when the night is over. One button: Build Your Table.
  • A proof row under it: funded by 365 backers at over 900% on Kickstarter · 4.94 stars across 54 verified reviews · sets up in under 60 seconds · backed by a limited warranty.
  • The bar states the offer instead of the campaign, rotating between free U.S. shipping on orders $999+ and “All tables are backed by a limited warranty”, each linked to its policy.
  • No pop-up, no floating chat; 46 requests and 3 third-party hosts (old: 373 and 24) — before the reviews and email apps are chosen.

Two Tables, and Accessories That Say What They Fit

Relic accessories fit Relic and Hexlite accessories fit Hexlite; mats and toppers fit both. On the old store that rule lived only in the FAQ, while the accessories page offered Shopify's availability and price filters. The new collections lead with the two tables side by side, and label every accessory with the table it fits.

Before

  • H1s read “Collection: Gaming Tables” and “Collection: Gaming Table Accessories”; titles end in “- Pre-order” — “Hexlite Gaming Table - Pre-order”, “Relic Table Extender - Pre-order”.
  • Accessories filter by Availability and Price only; nothing on a card says which table it fits.
  • No star ratings on any card, though the product pages show 4.94 from 54 Judge.me reviews.

After

  • Gaming Tables: Relic and Hexlite side by side — material line, price, stock status and ★ 4.94 (54) on each — and the Relic vs. Hexlite comparison kept from the old page.
  • Accessories: chips for All · Relic · Hexlite · Mats & Toppers · Table Expansion · Leg Systems, and a Relic / Hexlite / Both models tag on every card.
  • Clean product names, with stock or preorder status shown as a label instead of in the title.
  • Lighthouse Performance 85–90 mobile on Gaming Tables (old: 45–50).

From Closed Accordions to a Kit Builder

A Relic is an $879 piece of furniture, and almost every buyer adds to it: dice trays, player desks, an expander, a mat. The old page sold the table alone and kept its description, features and specifications behind closed accordions. The new page opens on the kit most hosts want, prices every add-on beside it, and shows the box contents and specifications without a click.

Before

  • Title “Relic Gaming Table - Pre-order” directly above an “Available now!” badge; $879, “Shipping calculated at checkout”.
  • Description, Features and Specifications in closed accordions; no accessory can be added from the page — they are sold from the collections.
  • The 4.94 ★ (54) Judge.me rating with a Verified badge sits by the price — worth keeping, and kept.
  • 16.8 MB on a phone in one run, 4.8 MB in the next; Lighthouse Performance 42–44 mobile, LCP 27–28 s.

After

  • Configure your kit opens on the Host Signature Kit — Relic, dice tray and player desk for $999 against $1,047 bought separately — with the Expander ($359), the Extended mat ($99) and more accessories one tick away.
  • What's in the box open beside the buy button; a specifications table — 23.5 × 23.5 × 6 in, 44 × 23.5 in with the Expander, 24 lbs, solid walnut, limited lifetime warranty, uniquely serialised.
  • Compare with Hexlite, the 4.94-star rating linked to the reviews further down, then the story bands, press quotes and the Expander.
  • Hexlite gets the same builder, with the preorder date on each accessory that has one (“estimated fulfillment February 2027”).
  • 1.2 MB on a phone; Lighthouse Performance 80–91 mobile (old: 42–44) and 96–98 desktop, LCP 3.0–4.5 s.

04 · Configurator

From “Which Setup Fits” to “Add Setup to Cart”

Whether a table fits your game is the question people ask before they buy, and the store already had a configurator for it. It returned one answer per title whatever the player count, listed products and quantities, and stopped there. The new one reads the player count, explains the fit, prices the setup and puts all of it in the cart.

Before

  • Titles without player counts: “Wingspan” returns CoreX, the same answer for two players as for five.
  • Each setup lists products and quantities — no prices, no total, no way to buy it from the page.
  • Product names carry “- Pre-order” here too.

After

  • 5,430 game records with player ranges: “Wingspan (5 Players)” returns TRICOREX, 70.5 × 44.0 in, because the game needs about 58.5 × 23.5 in of table.
  • The fit explained in a sentence, with the approved fit disclaimer under it.
  • A setup total and Add Setup to Cart on every configuration — tested: COREX adds the Hexlite and its Expander for $608; the five-player TRICOREX adds three of each for $1,824.
  • Hexlite / Relic toggle; the down arrow moves into the suggestions and Enter picks one.

Written for Buyers, Not Backers

The old FAQ opened with the dates of the Kickstarter campaign, and there was no About page at all. The new pages answer what a first-time buyer asks — when it ships, what the warranty covers, how the two models differ — and the policies state the shipping and warranty terms the store now promises.

Before

  • No About page — /pages/about returns 404.
  • The FAQ is headed “FAQ's” with no H1, and opens with “What were the dates for the inaugural Kickstarter campaign?” and “When will Kickstarter Rewards & preorders ship?”.
  • No free-shipping terms in the shipping policy.

After

  • About — “A premium game room that folds into a bag” — with the founder's reason for building it.
  • FAQ opens with “When will my order ship?” and “What warranty comes with my table?”.
  • Return & Warranty states the terms per model — Relic limited lifetime, Hexlite limited 3-year — and the Shipping policy states who qualifies for free shipping: table orders of $999+ to the contiguous U.S.
  • Contact, Assembly & Care, Accessibility and GPSR pages, all linked from the footer.

Merchant Review

Ten Checklist Items, Four Rounds, Checked Again on Shopline

Before anything was built on Shopline, the design went to the merchant as a clickable prototype. Their first review came back as a recorded walkthrough, which we turned into a ten-item checklist (C01–C10); three more rounds followed on the second, third and fourth versions, and the fifth closed every item that a prototype can close. A prototype passing is not a store passing, so below is each item checked again on the Shopline build on 8 October.

4 merchant review rounds10 checklist items6 working on the Shopline build4 still open
ItemWhat the merchant asked forOn the Shopline build todaySurfaceStatus
C01 Logo and custom fonts The Identity Package logo in Evergreen in the header; PP Pangaia Light, Orleans Light and Yport Regular load on every page. Brand On Shopline
C02 Keep the homepage, and make its buttons go somewhere The original homepage sections and photography kept, with the new modules between them; every link in it opens a working page (5 of 5). Homepage On Shopline
C03 One shared warranty line, with the terms per model The bar on every page rotates to “All tables are backed by a limited warranty.”, linked to the Return & Warranty policy, which sets out Relic (limited lifetime) and Hexlite (limited 3-year) separately. Homepage On Shopline
C04 Real product photography The merchant's own photos throughout, including the supplied Extended mat image wherever the $99 mat appears. Product page On Shopline
C05 Import the full game configurator dataset All 5,430 records with player ranges, loaded from a data file in the theme, so a new export replaces it without code changes. Setups priced and added to the cart in one click. Configurator On Shopline
C06 New product page with the expanded kit chooser Built: the kit builder opens on the $999 Host Signature Kit with the Expander and mat beside it. Not yet: the kit price in the cart — Add to Cart currently adds the Relic alone, at $879. Product page Open · build
C07 Add options from the cart without leaving it Working in the prototype (setup recommendations, the topper picker, confirmation at the button). The Shopline cart lists the items and the total only so far. Cart Open · build
C08 An accessory-credit progress bar Working in the prototype; on Shopline it waits on the credit promotion being set up in the store. Cart Open · store setup
C09 The remaining approved requirements Done: phone layout, keyboard use, Terms, Privacy and Shipping policies migrated and updated. Open: checkout, payments, shipping and tax, preorder handling and email automation, set up with the Shopline team. Store setup Open · store setup
C10 A preview with a clear status The Shopline store itself is now the review build; this page is its status. Store setup On Shopline
Why recheck on Shopline. The prototype closed or answered all ten items. Moving them onto the real store is where kit pricing, cart recommendations and the credit bar meet the platform's own cart, so those three are re-opened here rather than carried over as done. The fourth, C09, was open in the prototype too: it is the store setup itself — checkout, payments, shipping, tax and email.

The Shopline cart lists items and the total only; the prototype's setup recommendations, topper picker and accessory-credit bar (checklist C07, C08) are still to be built on the platform's cart.
Build the recommendations into the cart drawer and page; set up the credit promotion in the store so the bar has something to count. Cart Open · build fix
high Checkout, payments, shipping and tax aren't set up yet
Store settings outside the theme, with the Shopline team: payments, shipping and tax, preorder handling, email automation and the fulfilment integration; no end-to-end test order yet.

low Small grey captions fail contrast
Review bylines, the specifications note and the package disclosure — 11–12px text in #8a858e — measure 3.2–3.6:1 against their backgrounds (4.5:1 needed); 5 on the homepage, 8 on the product page.
Darken the caption grey until every pair passes 4.5:1. Accessibility Open · build fix
low The homepage description still says “any surface”
The meta description reads “…designed to transform any surface into the gaming table of your dreams” — the claim the page copy dropped in the last review round.
Rewrite it from the approved hero line (“sits on the surface you already own…”). SEO Open · build fix
low Product pages scroll sideways on phones
At 390px the image gallery is 4px wider than the screen on both product pages; every other page fits.

low The review count is fixed text until a reviews app is chosen
“4.94 stars across 54 verified reviews” is written into the theme; the Shopify store reads it live from Judge.me.

Add to Cart — $999 must add the Host Signature Kit as one line at $999, not the Relic alone at $879; then re-test the $1,449 Expanded Command Table and the $59 topper 2-pack.
