Labbox

Two stores and a 45 MB homepage in. One custom storefront out.

Labbox makes magnetic electronic blocks that snap into working circuits — Circuit Explorer kits, and board games co-developed with Hape. The range was split across two platforms: four kits on a Shopware store, each language edition sold as its own product, and the flagship Reactor Rescue board game on a separate Shopify store, where every button on the Shopware homepage's hero sent visitors. That homepage weighed 45 MB because product photos were served as full-size PNGs of up to 10 MB each. We redesigned the storefront from the brand out and built it from scratch as a custom Shopline theme: one store and one cart for all ten products, a filmed circuit library, an educator hub, and a homepage at 1.3 MB.

Where this project stands today. The custom theme is built and published on the Shopline store, which is still behind its storefront password: homepage, a shop with five collections, product pages (campaign-style pages for the board games), cart, the Learn library with twelve exercise pages, Educators, Gifts and About. Before launch, the store currency moves from USD to EUR (the theme's own copy already quotes euros), Labbox supplies the review quotes and founder photo that hold placeholder slots today, and the theme fixes listed under what's still in progress land. Every screenshot below is labelled with its source.

The Homepage Stops Sending Visitors Away

The old homepage was a banner for a product it didn't sell. Its hero — “The Board Game where you build REAL Circuits to win!” — and both its buttons led to a separate Shopify store, under a cookie modal, on a page with no H1. The new homepage opens on what Labbox is, puts the Kickstarter and Hape proof in the first screen, and sends its two buttons to the two ranges — both in the same store.

Before

  • Hero sells Reactor Rescue, but “Pre-order Now” and “Learn more” leave for games.labbox.education — a separate Shopify store with its own cart, fonts and checkout.
  • No H1 on the page; the desktop banner alone is a 9.3 MB PNG; a cookie modal sits over the centre on first visit.
  • Neither Hape nor the Kickstarter result appears anywhere in the homepage text; the footer still reads “© 2017 - 2025”.
  • 45 MB on desktop, 15 MB on mobile, 15 third-party hosts (Google Ads ×4, Microsoft Clarity ×4, Tag Manager, Typekit ×2…); Lighthouse Performance 46–52 mobile.

After

  • One H1: “Real electronics you can play with.” — then the promise in one line: magnetic blocks that snap into working circuits, no app, no soldering.
  • Ranked buttons Shop games and Shop kits, both into the same store; proof chips (3,812% funded · Built with Hape · Screen-free) and a ticker with 2,200 backers, free shipping to 9 countries and 30-day returns.
  • A hero film of a child building a working circuit, a nav drawn as a series circuit, and the purple-navy palette of the Reactor Rescue campaign.
  • 1.3 MB on desktop, 1.2 MB on mobile, 4 third-party hosts; Lighthouse Performance 92 desktop, Best Practices 100.

02 · Shop

Four Kits in a Carousel Become a Range

On Shopware the shop was one category: a carousel of four Circuit Explorer kits, and the page's only H1 was one product's name. Board games, bundles and spare parts weren't in it at all. The new shop lays the whole range out in five collections and explains the kit ladder in a sentence.

Before

  • One category, “Order your Labbox Kit now!”: four kits in a carousel.
  • Every title carries its language set — “Circuit Explorer Base (ES, FR, EN)” — because each language edition is a separate product.
  • The page's only H1 is a product name: “Circuit Explorer Lab Kit (ES, FR, EN)”.
  • No board games, bundles or spare parts; the page weighs 38 MB, most of it four product PNGs of 4.8–10.3 MB.

After

  • Five collections — Board games · Circuit Explorer kits · Bundles & value packs · Spare parts & accessories · Start with your child's age — plus Shop all and a Gifts page.
  • The kit ladder in one line: “Three steps — fundamentals, interaction, logic — or all of it at once in the Lab Kit. Every kit uses the same block system, so nothing you buy stops working.”
  • Every card states its step and what it teaches (“Kit · step 1 · circuits, light, switches”), with an age badge and a quick add.
  • 1.2 MB; Lighthouse Performance 96 desktop / 80 mobile.

03 · Product Page

One Product, Five Languages

The old product page sold a language set, not a kit: “Circuit Explorer Lab Kit (ES, FR, EN)” and “(EN, DE, IT)” are different products at different URLs. The new page sells one Lab Kit and asks which language the cards should be in — then answers the questions a parent has before paying €199.99.

Before

  • Title, price and Add to cart for one language edition; the other edition is a separate product with its own URL.
  • Bullet-point description and payment icons; no reviews on the page.
  • 26 MB on desktop, 38 MB on mobile — the gallery's PNGs load at full size; Lighthouse Performance 50 mobile, Accessibility 78.

After

  • Language picker — EN · DE · ES · FR · IT — on one product; the store holds them as real variants.
  • Buy box with what's in the box (all 31 blocks, 300+ filmed projects, ages 8–99), free shipping to 9 countries with GLS in 2–5 working days, 30-day returns, Stripe · PayPal · Klarna, Built with Hape.
  • Sticky buy bar on mobile; one image frame across the whole gallery.
  • 1.4 MB; Lighthouse Performance 98 desktop / 70 mobile, Accessibility 90.

04 · Board Games

The Flagship Moves Into the Store

Reactor Rescue is Labbox's lead product — the one the old homepage was built around — but it sold on a separate Shopify store with its own cart, fonts and checkout, so a game and a kit meant two checkouts. On Shopline it gets a campaign-style product page inside the same store, with the Explorer Edition offered in the buy box.

Before

  • games.labbox.education: a separate Shopify store — 350 requests, 13 third-party hosts, Inter and Oxanium instead of the main site's fonts.
  • Its own cart and checkout: a game and a kit cannot be bought together.
  • Strong campaign content — 2,200 backers, award badges, reviewer videos — most of which the main store's homepage doesn't carry.

After

  • Campaign page on the main store: “Reactor Rescue: the board game where you build real circuits”, gallery, at-a-glance specs, 2,200 Kickstarter backers · Project We Love.
  • Choose your edition in the buy box — Standard or Explorer — in the same cart as every kit.
  • Buzz Trace, the second game, has its own page in the same Board games collection.

05 · Learn & Educators

A Video List Becomes a Library — and Teachers Get a Door

Labbox's filmed exercises are its best content, and schools are a whole audience. The old site listed the exercises as a long numbered column per kit and had no page for educators at all. The new site files every circuit by kit and level, groups them into paths, gives each exercise its own page, and gives educators a page of their own.

Before

  • Learning Resources: a kit switcher over a long numbered list — 124 numbered entries on one page, one search field.
  • No H1 on the page.
  • No page for schools or teachers anywhere — /educators returns a 404.

After

  • “300+ circuits, filmed.” — filters by kit (Base, Boost, Pro, Reactor Rescue) and level (Beginner → Advanced), search, and three paths: Your first 10 circuits · Master parallel circuits · Logic gates from scratch.
  • Twelve exercise pages so far (e.g. “Parallel circuit: light and buzzer at once”), each one linkable and indexable.
  • Educators: “Real circuits for 24 kids of mixed ability. Prep you can do on a Sunday night.” — classroom-set pricing and a quote request.
  • About rewritten around the founders — two sisters, thousands of students — with a slot for their photo.
